Welcome Reception Venue
Address: 285 Main St, Gibraltar GX11 1AA, Gibraltar
We hope you can join us, our host HM Government of Gibraltar, and fellow delegates at the Summit Welcome Reception at The Convent. The venue is a pleasant 15-18 minute walk from the Sunborn Gibraltar, but there will also be a shuttle service available, departing Sunborn at 6.15pm and approximately 6.30pm and returning from 8.15pm.
In 1462, Christian forces took Gibraltar from the Moors, who had dominated the Rock for 750 years. The first people to settle on the grounds of what is now the Convent were Franciscan Friars, in around 1480. This led to the name 'Convent' being established. Over the next 50 years, as the Franciscans increased in wealth and popularity, they improved the building, transforming the property from wooden huts to the main stone Cloister in 1531, which still stands today.
In 1704, the British and Dutch successfully captured the Rock, bringing to an end Spanish rule. In 1711, the Governor of Gibraltar requisitioned the Convent for his palace, and by 1713 ejected the Franciscan Friars from his new home. In 1713, the Treaty of Utrecht officially ceded Gibraltar to Britain in perpetuity.
Since then, and over the next 311 years, the Convent has remained the Governor's home and Office in Gibraltar. The Governor is the King's representative in Gibraltar, making the Convent the Official Residence to the Royal Family when members visit. The Governor is also Head of local Government, and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in Gibraltar.
The Convent corresponds the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office's global network, and fulfils its role in promoting the UK's interests in the world, as well as acting as a hub for civic, military and ceremonial occasions and celebrations within the community.
